There’s excitement in the air around Cape Town’s transport future right now and property owners have more riding on it than most realise.
Much of the buzz has centred on the CapeTrain Express (also known as CapeTrainx), a bold vision of a rail network linking Cape Town International Airport to the CBD, Stellenbosch, Paarl, the Northern and Southern Suburbs, Cape Flats, West Coast, Helderberg and the planned Cape Winelands Airport. The renderings have lit up social media, and the reaction says a lot; Capetonians would like a better railway infrastructure with an airport link.
Why this matters to homeowners; transport shapes property value more reliably than almost anything else. When a commute drops from ninety minutes to thirty, a suburb stops being a compromise and starts being a choice.
The CapeTrainx itself is still very much a concept. It’s an independent proposal rather than an official project, and the City of Cape Town, Airports Company South Africa, Prasa and Cape Winelands Airport have all confirmed they aren’t formally involved at this stage.
A national rail master plan worth well over R1 trillion has been approved, and it includes handing management of Metrorail to the City of Cape Town — a shift the City has actively pushed for so it can run a more reliable, better-integrated service. Restoring and expanding the existing network sits right at the heart of that plan.
So which areas stand to benefit? The corridors already in the conversation are a useful guide along the southern line, suburbs like Muizenberg, Retreat and Diep River; in the north, Bellville, Parow and Goodwood; through the Boland, Paarl, Wellington and Stellenbosch; and in the Helderberg, Strand and Somerset West.
