As we head into a threatening El Niño wildfire season in the Western Cape, we're launching a new community initiative: the Quay 1 Wildfire Awareness Campaign.
We're excited to have partnered with two organisations that do vital work to protect our region from wildfires; the Cape Peninsula Fire Protection Association (CPFPA), a registered non-profit established under the National Veld and Forest Fire Act. It works with landowners across the Cape Metropolitan Area on prevention, compliance and readiness.
NCC Environmental Services (NCC-Group) specialises in integrated wildfire management, offering pre-suppression, suppression, rehabilitation and reporting services across the region.
The Western Cape's fynbos landscape is beautiful, but we all know it's also fire-prone, and the risk grows every year as communities expand along the mountains. We are launching this campaign to help property owners and their communities stay safe, informed, and prepared as we enter what is anticipated to be one of the hottest fire seasons in recent years due to the current El Niño cycle.
What you will get over the coming months:
- Practical guidance on reducing wildfire risk around your property;
- Expert advice from CPFPA and NCC on fire readiness, and what to do when a fire threatens your area;
- Fire alerts on our social channels, confirmed by the CPFPA;
- Ways to get involved, whether that is donating, volunteering or joining the CPFPA.
Protecting our region from fire depends heavily on community support, and there are meaningful ways to contribute beyond preparing your own property.
Donations to the CPFPA help fund wildfire prevention, protection and preparedness, fire awareness and education in neighbourhoods, and support for landowners across the Cape Metropolitan Area. Volunteering offers a more hands-on way to help; from assisting with community fire-readiness days to supporting local Fire Protection Association activities in your ward, building stronger, more resilient neighbourhoods in the process.
